Pantomime, or ‘Panto’, is a very old British theatrical tradition. From the glamour of London’s professional stages to the humble village hall, thousands of pantos are performed each year during the Christmas and New Year period. For generations, an essential part of the festive season has been a visit to the local theatre to join in the traditions of watching a well-loved panto story.
First and foremost panto is about telling a traditional story such as Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Aladdin. Its proper name in the UK is pantomime, BUT British pantomime has got nothing to do with the art form of telling stories without words. What makes panto different is how the story is told. There is singing, dancing, drama, comedy, colourful characters and audience participation.
In panto tradition, the Principal Boy, such as Aladdin, is played by a woman and there is always a comedy character, the Dame, played by a man.
The evil villain is always defeated by the handsome hero and a comedy duo gets up to all sorts of mischief and mayhem.
The audience don’t just sit quietly and watch either. They are expected to cheer the hero, boo the villain and at appropriate times shout out well practiced phrases such as “Oh yes he did! or “It’s behind you!” Panto is fun family entertainment and an experience that is not to be missed. Pirate Captain Romy O has sailed into town and is on the hunt for treasure. Prince Unzel of Tervuren is horrified when the King and Queen announce that he is to marry the wicked Wizard’s daughter, Desiree. But when Unzel and Romy come face to face at a party, love is in the air. Soon the pirates, Desiree and the Prince’s old nanny are all trying to get hold of the map leading to the wizard’s treasure. When Romy takes a sleeping potion and fakes her own death, is there tragedy on the cards? Or will we all spend a night laughing at the chaos and comedy involved as they work their way towards a happy ending?
Panto, or 'British Pantomime', is a form of interactive musical comedy theatre. This English-language, family show has a plot based on a well known story. Audience members are encouraged to shout out phrases to the performers and to sing along with certain parts. With wonderful characters, surprises galore, music, jokes, and drama, it is one of the craziest theatre events you could hope to see.
The Pantaloons are a group of volunteers (mainly BSB parents, staff, students and alumni) who put on a panto each year. This year’s show has all the fun and laughter you have come to expect from a Pantoloons production. It's sure to be a sell-out, so you really shouldn’t miss your chance to see it! Oh no you shouldn’t!
A tail (pun intended) of a cat who can walk with boots on his paws and who can talk. A puss whose ideas and loyalty help his master meet skint royalty. Of course it's not as easy as that, as the cat must fight with a wicked ogre.
Ali Baba is a happy, contented young woodcutter whose world is turned upside down when he stumbles across a band of thieves. With the local 'police force' unable to help, Ali decides that he must take action to stop the thieves and return the stolen property to its rightful owners.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we had to cancel our planned 2021 production. Instead, we kept the Panto spirit alive with the video extravaganza 'A Celebration of Panto' - the next best best thing to watching a live Panto performance.

Sell-out houses came to meet Alice, our intrepid heroine, whose curiosity took her all the way down a rabbit-hole and into the magical world of Wonderland. They joined her on a fantastical journey, meeting some crazy characters along the way – the unusual Mad Hatter, the mysterious Cheshire Cat, the hilarious Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the slightly scary Queen of Hearts!
What would happen to Alice in this amazing land? Would good finally triumph over evil? And how would she ever get home again?
